December 19, 2001, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released in theaters nationwide. It opened to about $75 million over its first five days, eventually grossed $315 million domestic, $871 million internationally, garnered 13 Oscar nominations and won four.
I knew at this time that movies would never be the same again.
Two more Rings films would follow over the next two years. Then there would be extended versions of all three films. And next year we get, The Hobbit.
Peter Jackson forever made a name for himself as one of the best director's in the business. He brought back the fantasy genre. And studios now use his model for making franchise films all at once. The technology developed for massive battle scenes is used in too many films to mention. He made stars out of Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom. He brought motion capture to the forefront, more so than Zemeckis ever did.
So, here on this date that forever changed the way we view movies, here is the first trailer.
