Review of Chllerama

I have a few things to discuss before I get into my review. First, I am not a huge horror movie fan but I have seen some of Adam Green and Joe Lynch's work. Frozen and Wrong Turn 2 being my favorites. Second, if you think this may be like Creepshow, it's not. Both are in the horror genre and both are anthologies but that is where the similarities end. This anthology was not taken too seriously and that works to make it a fun look at some of the best of horror movie genres.

The movie begins promisingly enough. The first segment of Joe Lynch's "Zom-B-Movie" ties all the stories together thematically plays out nicely with a bit of nostalgia for the old drive-in theater. I was caught a bit off guard by having sympathy for the drive-ins owner Cecil Kaufman, who has just lost his wife and is about to lose his drive-in theater.

We head into the first segment, "Wadzilla", a spoof on 1950's atomic monster movies. Adam Rifkin stars (in addition to writing/directing) as a man with an unbelievably low sperm count. I thought for sure that the giant sperm attacking the Statue Of Liberty would be my least favorite segment - but it's just funny and gross.

Tim Sullivan directs takes a very bold step with his segment. Think of 'Grease' meets 'Happy Days' and you'll sort of get the idea. Throw in some gay men and large hairy man monsters and you'll get 'I Was A Teenage Werebear.' Oh, and yes it is a musical!
Adam Green, of the "Hatchet" and "Spinal" flicks that mix both comedy and horror, re-teams Joel David Moore, who plays Hitler in 'The Diary of Anne Frankenstein.' This is the funniest of the anthology with an all-subtitled '40s-type feel. Kane Hodder as the Jewish Frankenstein that won't be denied the opportunity to attack Hitler.

Then we head back to "Zom-B-Movie" - the film reaches its climax with Cecil mobilizing our two young heroes to action. There are lots of really cool zombie kills here! At the very end you will hear just about every memorable line from just about every well-known movie from the last decade!

Chillerama is delivered this fall and worth checking out for a laugh and some seriously gross-out moments.
Scary isn't a word I would use to describe this movie at all. But Chillerama is also about making you uncomfortable as possible and definitely not a film for everyone. Chillerama puts both sick and slick back into the anthology genre where it belongs.
