Origins of name: Atwater refers to the Atwater Village district of Los Angeles, a regular haunt of animators in the early days of the Walt Disney Studio. "Ink & Paint" was the name of the Disney animation department that once hand-traced the outlines and hand-painted the colors for all Disney films and cartoons.
Fictional back story: The store sells art supplies – paints, brushes, paper and more. "We help bring your art to life!" the store proudly proclaims. Above the store is the Atwater School of Art & Animation. The school's instructors are Messrs. Clark, Larson, Johnston, Thomas, Kimball, Davis, Kahl, Lounsbery and Reitherman. (In real life, these were the last names of Walt Disney's most trusted senior animators, whom he affectionately called his Nine Old Men.)
Street address: Of all the tributes to Disney history in Buena Vista Street's address numbers, Atwater's is the most direct. 2719 is the street number of the Walt Disney Studio when it was on Hyperion Avenue in Los Angeles. Although 2719 Hyperion Ave. is now a Gelson's Market, a plaque on the building acknowledges its previous significance. The Disney Studio was at this location from 1926 to 1940.
