Blu-Ray Review: The Muppet Movie (Nearly 35th Anniversary Edition)

One of my favorite childhood movies is here on glorious blu-ray!

The Muppet Movie takes us all the back to the very beginning. Back to a time before The Muppet Show. You see how a chance encounter with a Hollywood agent sets Kermit on a quest to become the greatest frog in showbiz! We follow Kermit as he makes friends along the way to Hollywood! Will Kermit escape the evil clutches of an obsessive restaurant owner, a mad German scientist and overcome all the obstacles thrown at him?

Video Quality:

This film has never looked better! While not perfect, you can tell this film was remastered with love and care. The colors just pop off the screen and skin tones as well as material tones all look perfect. There still is some graininess but not enough to take away from the film. This is the Disney restoration that we have come to know and expect!

Audio Quality:

A beautiful DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track can be found here! The dialogue is clean and crisp and the music has never sounds so rich and pure!

Bonus Material:

  • Jim Frawley's Extended Camera Test (HD, 18 minutes): A pre-production test shoot to see how to best film Kermit, Fozzie, and the rest of the gang. You can tell there was much more footage and I wish they had included more here!

  • Frog-E-Oke Sing-Along (HD, 9 minutes): Sing along to "Rainbow Connection," "Movin' Right Along" and "Can You Picture That" with some fun text!

  • Pepe Profiles Present Kermit: A Frog's Life (SD, 7 minutes): Pepe the Prawn takes a look at Kermit's life.

  • Disney Intermission (HD): Pause the film to be treated to several different songs.

  • Doc Hopper's Commercial (HD, 1 minute): Hopper's restaurant promo in glorious widescreen!

  • Original Trailers (HD, 6 minutes): The film's original teaser and theatrical trailers presented in HD!

Overall, a solid presentation all around! The best picture quality ever to go along with great sound! The bonus material was fun but I still wanted more. But any fan of The Muppets owes it to themselves to add this to their collection!
