Blu-Ray Review: The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition!
The Little Mermaid was the start of the next Golden Age of Animation at The Walt Disney Studios. The years prior saw a glimmer of hope but they couldn't get it just right. But the return of the Disney animated musical made a huge splash! The now classic music from Howard Ashman and Alan Menken were a return to the great songwriting teams of Disney past.
In the rare case that you haven't seen this movie, then here is a quick recap. The movie follows a teenage mermaid named Ariel who is completely fascinated by the surface world. So much so that she even collects their artifacts that sink to the bottom of the sea. Her father, King Triton, forbids her to have anything to do with the surface world but Ariel is too much of a free-spirit and continues to watch those above the sea. Ariel spots a young Prince and falls in love. She makes a deal with the sea-witch Ursula to trade her voice in order to become human. Will the Prince fall in love with Ariel? Will she ever become a mermaid again? Watch this now classic animated film to see what happens next.
Video Quality
After the last several Disney blu-ray releases I was afraid that I was in for more of the same low quality restoration. Thankfully because this is a Diamond Edition film, the restoration is pristine! Vibrant colors and sharp detail make this film shine! The movie has never looked better!
Audio Quality
The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 Surround Track is solid! Voices are crystal clear and the songs and music are enveloping, creating a rich sound environment! The Little Mermaid has never sounded better!
The Little Mermaid: New HD Bonus Features
- @DisneyAnimation (HD, 11 minutes): A solid feature that you rarely see on a Disney blu-ray release anymore. It showcases both veteran and new animators in their journey to the studios. I feel that there is more footage that may mean a documentary in the future. I could have watched hours of this footage.
- Under the Scene (HD, 13 minutes): Another great feature showcasing how real footage was used to overcome complex shots and other challenges with the animation.
- Howard's Lecture (HD, 16 minutes): Watch this amazing lunchtime lecture by Disney Legend, the late Howard Ashman, a writer and lyricist for Disney and was one of the creative people behind the idea of The Little Mermaid being made as a musical.
- Deleted Character: Harold the Merman (HD, 2 minutes): Directors John Musker and Clements introduce a character who din't make it into the final version of the film, Harold the Merman.
- Part of Her World (HD, 5 minutes): Ariel voice actress, Jodi Benson heads to Walt Disney World to the opening of Disney's Animation Resort and takes her children to Ariel's Grotto in New Fantasyland.
- Crab-E-Oke Sing Along (HD, 16 minutes): Sing along with "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea," "Poor Unfortunate Souls," "Les Poissons" and "Kiss the Girl," with these dynamic karaoke shorts.
- Music Video (HD, 4 minutes): Carly Rae Jepsen performs "Part of Your World."
The Little Mermaid: Classic DVD Bonus Features
- Audio Commentary (HD): Directors/writers Ron Clements and John Musker are joined by composer Alan Menken deliver a lively commentary filled with great stories of the film's history, production, technical discussion about the animation, and voice casting.
- Deleted Scenes (SD, 26 minutes): A total of seven unfinished deleted scenes are available, with introductions by Musker and Clements: "Fathom's Below" (Alternate Version), "Backstage with Sebastian," "Poor Unfortunate Souls" (Alternate Version), "Sebastian Lost in the Castle," "Advice from Sebastian," "Fight with Ursula" (Alternate Ending) and "Silence is Golden" (Song Demo).
- Backstage Disney (HD/SD): Nine extras can be found here:
- The Little Match Girl (HD, 7 minutes):One of my favorite shorts that was going to be part of a new Fantasia film after Fantasia 2000.
- The Making of The Little Mermaid (SD, 46 minutes): An excellent 6-part production documentary.
- The Story Behind the Story" (SD, 11 minutes): A feature on Hans Christian Anderson and his original story.
- Storm Warning: Special Effects Unit (SD, 9 minutes): Creating the storm at sea.
- Under the Sea Early Presentation Reel (SD, 3 minutes): Take a look at the conceptual art set to music.
- John & Ron Make Caricatures of Each Other (SD, 1 minute): Watch Ron and John draw one another.
- Animators Comment on their Characters (SD, 2 minutes): Brief interview clips.
- The Little Mermaid Handshake (SD, 1 minute): The directors demonstrate a secret handshake.
- Original Theatrical Trailer (SD, 2 minutes)
- Music & More (HD/SD, 14 minutes): Four songs with on-screen lyrics (HD) -- "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea," "Les Poissons" and "Kiss the Girl" -- as well as a "Kiss the Girl" (SD) music video with Ashley Tisdale.
- Disneypedia: Life Under the Sea (HD, 8 minutes): A kid-friendly oceanic wildlife feature.
- Behind the Ride that Almost Was (HD, 6 minutes): Abandoned plans for a Little Mermaid attraction with commentary by Disney Legend and Imagineer Tony Baxter. This would have been a spectacular attraction!
- Under the Sea Adventure (SD, 4 minutes): A computer rendered version of what the attraction would have been like. Another one of those great ideas that never happened!
This is the blu-ray release that I have come to expect from Disney! A beautiful high definition transfer with an equally high quality audio transfer and full of extras that showcase what a Disney blu-ray release should be!

Eating Challenge: Triple Threat Challenge at Ola Hawaiian BBQ!
Thursday was my first time entering the world of competitive eating. Yes, this was my crazy idea and yet I had three great friends who stepped up to take the challenge with me!
As Jedi Master Obi-Wan said , "Who's the more foolish, the fool, or the fool who follows him?"
We were all about to find out!
We went to Ola Hawaiian BBQ in Fullerton. (Address at the end) They are the home to two eating challenges, the first is the Triple Threat Challenge and the second is the Stan Musubi Challenge.
The Triple Threat Challenge is to eat nine musubi (three spam, three chicken and three beef) and three scoops of mac salad in 15 minutes. The Stan Musubi is to eat a 7 pound musubi with spam, chicken and beef inside in 35 minutes. We decided the lesser of the two evils was the Triple Threat Challenge!
Oh, and for those of you who don't know what musubi is, then allow me to explain. A musubi is simply rice wrapped around in nori (seaweed). Anything can be placed on top or in the middle of the musubi but it's more popularly served with spam or chicken or beef teriyaki on top or in the middle!
I'm getting ready to sign the waiver! The two toughest things on the waiver is that you can't stand up during any point once the challenge begins and that you cannot drink anything during the challenge!
Here is my plate or tray! Wow, that is a ton of food!
I'm all smiles now! Will I still be all smiles at the end of the challenge?
Here we are before the challenge begins! Bryan is on my left, DJ to my right and Mark to the far right!
It appears that both DJ and Mark are impressed by my eating ability. In the beginning Mark was in the early lead. DJ had pretty much hit the wall early and Bryan was right behind me.
It felt like an eternity by the time we reached the halfway mark. I was starting to hit the wall. What made it tough was the constant chewing and not being able to drink anything. Your mouth starts to get tired and then you start to run out of saliva in your mouth to help you swallow the food down. Then your mind starts to tell you that you are full.
In the end I ate the most and only had two of my musubi left. I destroyed the mac salad that was one of the best I have even had next to my mom's!
Yes, we all failed miserably but had a great time!
One last photo!
After we were done, it felt so good to get something to drink!
The challenge is $25 a person and if you beat the challenge then it's free and you get a shirt and your photo on the Wall of Fame. We lost and ended up on the Wall of Shame!
Now, who is ready for the next eating challenge?

NEED FOR SPEED / Teaser Trailer Now Available on iTunes!
DreamWorks Pictures’ “Need for Speed” marks an exciting return to the great car culture films of the 1960's and 70's, when the authenticity of the world brought a new level of intensity to the action on-screen. Tapping into what makes the American myth of the open road so appealing, the story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country journey for our heroes -- one which begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, "Need for Speed" captures the freedom and excitement of the game in a real-world setting, while bringing to life the passion for the road that has made our love of cars so timeless.
The film centers around Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle-cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. Struggling to keep his family-owned garage afloat, he reluctantly partners with the wealthy and arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Bonet (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save Tobey's shop, a disastrous race allows Dino to frame Tobey for a crime he didn’t commit, sending Tobey to prison while Dino expands his business out west.
Two years later, Tobey is released and set on revenge -- but he knows his only chance to take down his rival Dino is to defeat him in the high-stakes race known as De Leon—the Super Bowl of underground racing. However to get there in time, Tobey will have to run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet that includes dodging pursuing cops coast-to-coast as well as contending with a dangerous bounty Dino has put out on his car. With the help of his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.
Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, “Need for Speed” captures the thrills of the game in a real-world setting. “Need for Speed” is presented by DreamWorks Pictures, produced by John Gatins, Pat O’Brien and Mark Sourian and directed by Scott Waugh. The screen story is by John Gatins and George Gatins and the screenplay is by George Gatins and John Gatins, based on the video game series created by Electronic Arts. The film releases in U.S. theaters on March 14, 2014.
Wine Review: Sequin Wines Pinot Grigio and Rosé!
I had the privilege to review two wines from Sequin. They are part of a larger wine family called DFV Wines that have been producing wines for three generations now.
Sequin was launched in March of this year. They produce three wines, a Moscato, a Pinot Grigio and a Rosé. I was generously sent a bottle of their Pinot Grigio and a bottle of their Rosé!
The bottles are very appealing and immediately give you the impression that they are a fun and bubbly wine!

Both wines were a very pleasant surprise especially because they come with an easy to twist off cap and not a cork. So they are easy to open and to enjoy! They are a great value at $11.99 a bottle! If you visit the website you can find some great drink recipes!

Hyundai SEMA Vehicle Preview - Bisimoto Engineering Hyundai Genesis Coupe
HYUNDAI PARTNERS WITH POWERTRAIN GURU BISIMOTO TO CREATE 1,000 HORSEPOWER SEMA SHOW GENESIS COUPE
Bisimoto Engineering Leverages the Proven Durability of Stock Hyundai
Powerplant to Create Monster-powered Genesis Coupe Variant
COSTA MESA, Calif., Sept. 23, 2013 –
Hyundai is again partnering with the engine wizards of Bisimoto
Engineering to create a 1,000 horsepower Genesis Coupe for the 2013 SEMA
show in Las Vegas. Bisimoto Engineering is known for extracting
awesome, reliable power out of production-grade, everyday
powerplants, and the Bisimoto 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is no
exception, with 1,000 horsepower generated from a turbocharged
Hyundai-factory-based 3.8-liter V6 engine. The Bisimoto powertrain uses
newly-designed internal parts, using the naturally-aspirated
Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec engine as its core building block. The
Bisimoto concept is designed for the reliability of a street car but
with the outrageous power of a no-holds-barred racer.
“The
key to producing reliable, high-horsepower engines goes well beyond the
design, engineering and fabrication of performance parts. The core
powerplant must be strong enough to withstand advanced
modifications. The Genesis Coupe 3.8-liter Lambda engine is a
thoroughly robust powerplant, and Bisimoto Engineering is excited to
develop it to its full potential for the rigors of competitive
motorsport,” said Bisi Ezerioha, owner of Bisimoto Engineering.
Complementing
the extensive work underhood, Bisimoto created a custom Electric Blue
paint, Denmatic design graphics package, ARK hood and Carbon Fiber
decklid. From the rear view, a Burns stainless
exhaust and Bisimoto rear badge round out the visual impact.

Starring Lily James, Richard Madden, Academy Award®-winner Cate Blanchett and Oscar®-nominee Helena Bonham Carter and Directed by Academy Award®-nominee Kenneth Branagh
Burbank, Calif. (September 23, 2013)—Walt
Disney Pictures announced today that principal photography has begun at
Pinewood Studios in London, on “Cinderella,” Disney’s first-ever live
action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale.
Directed by Academy Award®-nominee
Kenneth Branagh (“Jack Ryan,” “Thor”), the film stars Lily James
(“Downton Abbey,” “Wrath of the Titans”) in the title role, Richard
Madden (“Game of Thrones,” “Birdsong”) as the Prince, Oscar®-winner
Cate Blanchett (“The Aviator”) as the infamous stepmother Lady
Tremaine, and Academy Award-nominee Helena Bonham Carter (“The King’s
Speech,” “Alice in Wonderland”) as the Fairy Godmother. Holliday
Grainger (“Great Expectations,” “Anna Karenina”) and Sophie McShera
(“Downton Abbey,” “Waterloo Road”) play Ella’s stepsisters Anastasia and
Drisella, respectively. Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd (“The Avengers,” “The Girl
with the Dragon Tattoo”) and Nonso Anozie (“Game of Thrones,” “The
Grey”) play the Arch Grand Duke and the Prince’s loyal friend, the
Captain. Tony® Award-winner Derek Jacobi portrays the King.
“Cinderella”
is produced by Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: First Class,” “Elysium”), Allison
Shearmur (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”), David Barron (“Harry
Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” “Jack Ryan”), from a screenplay by
Chris Weitz (“About a Boy,” “The Golden Compass”).
The
filmmaking team includes three-time Academy Award-winning production
designer Dante Ferretti (“The Aviator,” “Hugo,” “Sweeney Todd: The Demon
Barber of Fleet Street”), three-time Oscar-winning costume designer
Sandy Powell (“The Aviator,” “The Young Victoria,” “Shakespeare in
Love”), director of photography Haris Zambarloukos (“Sleuth,” “Thor”)
and Academy Award-winning editor Martin Walsh (“Chicago,” “Clash of the
Titans”).
The
timeless story of “Cinderella” dates back to 1697 when first created by
Charles Perrault, although it truly came to life for millions all over
the world in 1950 with Walt Disney’s celebrated animated feature.
Director
Kenneth Branagh says: “It is impossible to think of Cinderella without
thinking of Disney and the timeless images we’ve all grown up watching.
And those classic moments are irresistible to a filmmaker. With Lily
James we have found our perfect Cinderella. She combines knockout beauty
with intelligence, wit, fun and physical grace. Her Prince is being
played by Richard Madden, a young actor with incredible power and
charisma. He is funny, smart and sexy and a great match for Cinderella.”
The
story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant
father remarries following the tragic death of her mother. Keen to
support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady
Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home.
But, when Ella’s father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds
herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally
relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and
spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope.
Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor
her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will
not give in to despair nor despise those who abuse her. And then there
is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is
really a prince, not merely an employee at the Palace, Ella finally
feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears as if her fortunes may be
about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all
maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again
encountering the charming “Kit.” Alas, her stepmother forbids her to
attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy
tales, help is at hand as a kindly beggar woman steps forward and, armed
with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella’s life forever.
Production on “Cinderella” will take place at Pinewood Studios and locations throughout England.

Review of The Little Mermaid Second Screen Live!
My friend Daisy and I went to the first showing of The Little Mermaid Second Screen Live at Downtown Disney in Anaheim.
The Second Screen Live allows one to bring their iPad into the theater and play games, answer trivia and sing-a-long with the songs while watching the movie on the big screen with other theater goers.
This is the second time Disney has offered this one of a kind experience in the theaters. The first was for The nightmare Before Christmas that they are doing once again this year.
Getting ready for the movie to start!
There is an intro from Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel, who takes you through the process to make sure your iPad is ready to go.
One of the mazes you get to do to help some of the characters out as the movie unfolds. It's all synched up with the movie in the same way that Disney offers Second Screen on some of their blu-rays for the home audience. But the home audience only gets to use Second Screen for additional information. Second Screen Live in the theaters is all about fun and games while you watch the movie.
I found myself singing louder than normal!
Under The Sea!
You know you want to Kiss The Girl!
Now I didn't take any photos while the trivia was playing because they have a time limit and the faster you answer the more points you get! The person with the most points won a prize at the end of the movie! The movie even takes breaks while the characters interact to show off point totals and more!
Sasaki Time for the win! Actually Daisy won but our iPads kept showing different scores! We brought this to the Disney reps attention at the end of the movie.
This Limited Collector's Edition individually numbered poster was our prize!
Daisy and I loved this and wish that there were more people in the theater to play against. We are definitely fans and are encouraging more friends to come and check this out! We both look forward to The Nightmare Before Christmas and hope we get invited back for another media preview!
An iPad is not necessary if you just want to watch the movie but you will feel left out when others are cheering or laughing at the games they are playing throughout the movie!
The Second Screen Live is only being offered at select theaters across the country:

Taking a look at the other side of the arch that we just went through.
Taking a look at the massive Cadillac Range!
The waterfall looks like it is glowing in the distance!
It just reminds me of the loneliness and vastness of the desert.
No one creates themed environments better than Disney!
One last look of the butte and the waterfall!
