4K Digital Review of Alien: Romulus

The Alien franchise has been one of my favorites for years. The combination of sci-fi and horror has captivated me for decades. While the more recent takes on the franchise have been less than stellar, Alien: Romulus is a return to form. While it is a standalone film set between the first two movies, it pays homage to the first three movies while carving out its own narrative.

The story takes place on a remote mining planet. A group of young colonists are joining an expedition to salvage a space station and use it as their opportunity to escape from their livelihood. Little do they know that the station was once a bio-lab where deadly experiments took place. As the station comes back online, so do the creatures that that were meant to be left behind.

Director Fede Alvarez creates an atmosphere that fits the aesthetic of when the original movie was made. It doesn't feel like a harsh leap in technology. It feels rough and gritty like the original movies. Alvarez sets the tone perfectly. The young cast also helps with stellar performances. Led by Rain (Cailee Spaeny), the entire cast is solid and do not try to recreate the performances of any other actors in the franchise.

Video:

The 4K Digital transfer here is stunning. It intensifies everything from the close-ups of the Xenomorphs to the claustrophobic interiors of the space station. The shadows are inky black and the details of the station are crystal clear. The sharpness of the video adds to the intensity of each scene and only adds layers to the creepy atmosphere.

Audio:

The Dolby Atmos track only adds to the the terror. The sound design is immersive from the acid blood dripping around you to the shrieks of the creatures stalking their prey. The film's score adds to the tension and fear.

4K Digital Review of Sideways

For its 20th Anniversary, Sideways got a 4K Digital release. When the film came out in 2004, it started a cultural movement about wine. And much like the wine, the film has only gotten better with age.

The story centers around Miles (Paul Giamatti) and his old college roommate Jack (Thomas Haden Church), who is about to get married. They are out on a pre-wedding bachelor trip for wine and a mid-life crisis. Miles is fresh from a divorce and a series of rejections for his unpublished novel. Jack, on the other hand, is ready for his last hurrah. He wants one last fling before he gets married.

Then things begin to take a turn when they meet Maya (Virginia Madsen) and Stephanie (Sandra Oh) who both work at wineries they two men visit. Jack begins a torrid affair with Stephanie while Miles takes a much slower approach with Maya.

In the end, both men must deal with some hard truths about their lives, their choices and their futures. Life is unpredictable and not always smooth sailing. The fears of aging, regret and second chances all hit home.

Video:

If you have never seen the film before, then there is no better to experience it. The 4K transfer is stunning and the lush landscapes of California's Wine Country sparkle and shine. The natural light and earthy tones will make you feel like you are right there in wine country.

Audio:

The Dolby Atmos audio mix also really immerses you into the film. The ambient sounds of the backgrounds, the subtle clinking of wine glasses, the crystal clear dialogue and the wonderful jazz score make you feel like you are right there with the actors.

Bonus Features:

All of the bonus features are from the previous release.

Audio Commentary from Paul Giamatti and Thomas Hayden Church

    Behind-The-Scenes Featurette

    Theatrical Trailer

    Deleted Scenes

Conclusion:

On the 20th Anniversary of the release of Sideways, the movie ages like fine wine. Incredible performances, humor and heartache make this a modern classic. Whether it is your first time or your 20th time watching it, this 4K release is the definitive way to experience the movie. A fantastic addition to your movie library.

Sideways is available for the first time at digital retailers (Fandango, Prime Video and Apple TV)

4K Digital Review of Deadpool & Wolverine

The third installment of the Deadpool franchise and the 14th X-Men film is the perfect send off to the 20th Century X-Men movies and hopefully a huge new beginning in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) has said goodbye to his alter ego Deadpool until he is taken from his timeline by the TVA. The TVA's Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) offers Wade a future on Earth 616. Wade accepts but then realizes that his timeline is deteriorating on Earth 100005, he sets off to save his universe by restoring its anchor being, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Paradox sends the two heroes to the Void, a wasteland of pruned people, places and things sent there by the TVA.

Video:

The 4K transfer is one of the best I have ever seen! Everything is crisp and clear and colors pop off the screen. Details such as the textures of the costumes really shine here. The level of detail is extraordinary and the 4K visuals are a triumph!

Audio:

Equally impressive is the audio quality. It felt as good as the theater experience. Dialogue is normalized through the center channel and you do not need to adjust the volume. Action sequences make great use of the surround channels. The audio is perfectly mixed for big action pieces and quieter moments. You feel immersed into the movie.

Bonus Features:

  • Finding Madonna: Making the Oner – Director Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds break down a historic scene in the film: the “Oner,” which highlights the first fight in which Deadpool and Wolverine finally unite.
  • Practical Approach: Celebrating the Art of Ray Chan – A tribute to longtime Marvel Studios collaborator Ray Chan, who sadly passed away in 2024 – the cast and crew recall anecdotes and echo the resounding positive effects of filming on the set he helped design, full of intricate details and Easter eggs.
  • Loose Ends: The Legacy Heroes – Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, and the cast and crew go through some of the mind-blowing cameos and the characters who finally get their deserved endings. They cover the intensive choreographed sequences, updated costumes, and assembling the iconic team.
  • Wolverine – Hugh Jackman describes the return to his iconic role as Wolverine. Cast and crew discuss how he picks up his yellow and blue suit for the first time, brings variety to the role, and continues his legacy from previous films.
  • Filmmaker Commentary – Listen to audio commentary by director Shawn Levy and actor Ryan Reynolds.
  • Gag Reel – Watch some hilarious outtakes on set with the cast and crew of Deadpool & Wolverine
  • Deleted Scenes
    • Elevator Ride – Paradox explains the sacred timeline to Deadpool as they walk around the TVA.
    • Do Nothing – B-15 instructs Paradox to stay out of trouble, rejecting his efforts to take action.
    • Daddy’s In Love – B-15 and Peter strike up a romance. Peter announces he is in love to his friends, Headpool and Kidpool.
  • “Fun Sack”
    • Dr. Deadpool – Dr. Deadpool, Ph.D. very kindly informs us of the risks of testicular cancer and tries to convince Hugh Jackman to do a live checkup.
    • Product Review – Deadpool shows off some toys and trinkets from the franchise, including one top-secret item that may or may not be a spoiler.
    • Wade is Back – Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman promote a movie...but Ryan misleads Hugh on just exactly which movie they are there for.

Conclusion:

Easily my favorite live-action movie of the year comes home in a video and audio presentation that rivals the theater. Complete with wonderful bonus features including an incredible audio commentary with Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy makes this a must add to your home movie collection!

Deadpool & Wolverine is now available on digital, DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K UHD.

4k Review of Kinds of Kindness

Kinds of Kindness is available on digital and out on Blu-ray and DVD on October 8th.

The movie features three stories, starting with a man trying to take control of his life, a policeman whose wife was missing-at-sea has returned and seems like a different person, and a woman who is determined to find a person with a special ability and destined to become a spiritual leader.

Now, the films of Yorgos Lanthimos have an acquired taste. Some of his films stay within the realm of understanding while others are offbeat and require some patience to understand the perspective. Kinds of Kindness is far from being offbeat. There is little to no setup to what is happening as you sit there and try to figure out what is unfolding. And as we have come to expect from Lanthimos, this film uses sexuality to help the story. If you are not a fan of graphic nudity and sexual situations then this is a movie to avoid. While the film will more than provide a lot of discussion, the pay off at the end isn't worth the very long runtime. At times it is a tough film to watch and definitely not a film for everyone.

Video:

The streaming 4K presentation is nearly perfect here. Color reproduction and skin tones are practically flawless. The blacks and shadows are inky and stand out when combined with mixed content.

Audio:

The audio mix is very front heavy as to be expected with this type of movie. Dialogue, music and sound effects are crystal clear. There is very little use of the surround channels but when utilized create an enveloping experience.

Bonus Features:

Featurette

  • It Takes All Kinds: The Vision of Kinds of Kindness

  • Join cast and crew for a behind-the-scenes look at this unique triptych story written by Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou. See how the sets, costumes, cinematography and music amplify the film's themes, and discover — maybe — what RMF stands for.

Deleted Scenes

  • Robert ignores the SatNav

  • Liz isn't recognized

Conclusion:

Kinds of Kindness is another bizarre and perplexing film from Yorgos Lanthimos. The 4K Digital version features excellent video and audio along with a few bonus features. The film is definitely not for everyone but I do recommend it for Lanthimos fans or those that enjoy different types of films.

The Sixth Sense/Signs 4K Digital Review

For the first time ever, M. Knight Shyamalan's movies The Sixth Sense and Signs are out on 4K UHD Digital and coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray disc on October 22.

It's crazy to think that the films are 25 and 23 years old. The original negatives for both films were scanned at 4K resolution and restored in High Dynamic Range (HDR).

Once you have seen The Sixth Sense, you can never see it the same way again. So watching the 4K presentation was really watching the masterpiece that Shyamalan put together. Bruce Willis play Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a child psychologist meets 8 year old Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment). Crowe is not prepared for the things that haunt Cole. The brilliant performance of Osment also brings it all together.

The 4K video is great for a film shot on film and restored. The shadows, and there are a lot of shadows, are rich and inky. The colors are vibrant and the details of the clothing and skin tones are very evident here.

The audio mix is subtle as there is not much use of the surround channels but dialogue, score and sound effects are crystal clear.

Signs is the alien invasion movie for people who aren't into crazy special effects or large battles. It will make you question if things happen for a reason or just a coincidence. It tests the faith of Graham Hess (Mel Gibson), a former reverend who lives with his brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix) and two children on a farm in Pennsylvania. After the accidental death of his wife, he has left his congregation and has lost hope in the things he stood for as a pastor.

The 4K presentation looks even better than The Sixth Sense. The video is crisp and clean and the colors are vibrant. The audio also gets a boost and the surround channels are very effective with all the subtle sound effects. The dialogue is crisp and clear here and the score has never sounded better.

Conclusion:

The films are two of my favorites from Shyamalan and have never looked or sounded better. I really wish there were some sort of bonus material here for either film. If you have never seen them, this is the way to watch the for the first time. If you have seen them then they will be a welcomed addition to your library if you haven't added them already.

4K Digital Review of Inside Out 2

When Inside Out came out in 2015, it caught us all by surprise with a heartwarming story about growing up and the emotions that struggle to work together to keep us together. A charming movie and a huge box office win meant that a sequel was inevitable. I don't think anyone was prepared  for Inside Out 2 to not only recapture the originals magic but far surpass it and become the biggest growing animated film in history.

Inside Out 2 essentially picks up right where the first movie left off and gives us a quick recap to get us all up to speed. Riley (Kensington Tallman) is now 13 years old and has grown up to be a kind, loving person who loves hockey and has two best friends, Grace (Grace Lu) and Bree (Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green). Riley hits puberty and is flooded with a whole new set of emotions along with all of the original emotions. She also finds out her friends are going to be going to a different high school from her and this threatens their friendships.

Inside Out 2 serves as a way to let kids know that things will get better. That we are all more than just our emotions. The complexities of growing up, trying to fit in, all shape who we are and who we will become. This film is a reminder that none of us are alone when it comes to experiencing all our emotions.

Video:

The 4K Digital UHD transfer is stunning from beginning to end. The textures of the materials, the characters and the backgrounds are sharp and the vividness of the colors really stand out. There is so much to take in and you will keep finding better and better examples of the attention to detail that Pixar always puts into their animation.

Audio:

The Dolby Atmos audio track is practically perfect here. The dialogue is crisp and clean from the front channels. Surround activity is spectacular and will give your side and rear channels a good workout. Another outstanding audio effort from Disney and Pixar.

Bonus Features:

  • New Emotions – With Riley's imminent puberty, the story of Inside Out 2 always suggested that there would be a party of new emotions complicating Riley's world—and throwing a wrench into Joy's hard-won stability. But exactly what those new emotions could be was a big question mark. Casting the new emotions in Riley’s mind was a fun exploration into the shifting mindset of a teenager, and was also informed by some of the discarded scenes and characters from the original film. In this documentary we’ll discuss that process of creating Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy—from narrowing them down from a long list of possible emotions, to the design, animation, and voicing of these new, hilarious, and strangely recognizable characters.

  • Unlocking the Vault – In a kind of visual commentary, a group of central creatives watch and discuss the scene “The Vault.” As they stop and start—and refer to various IP versions of the scene—we’ll hear about the inspiration for Riley’s repressed memories like Bloofy and Lance Slashblade, the development of the scene in Story, and the technical challenges of creating 2D characters that exist in the CG world of Riley’s mind.

  • Deleted Scenes
    • Cold Open – In this alternate opening, a now 13-year-old Riley awkwardly fumbles her way through an original song she wrote for a school audition.
    • Broken Joy – After momentarily being unable to drive the console, Joy worries that she might be starting to malfunction.
    • Pool Party – After Riley tries too hard to be fun at an older teen’s party – resulting in utter embarrassment – her “Anxiety” becomes “Self-Loathing” who then ousts our hero emotions from headquarters.
    • Puberty Park – After seeing their faces printed on “wanted posters,” Joy and the others rogue emotions race through a puberty-themed amusement park while being chased by mind worker cops.
    • Shame Spiral – At a lock-in with some cool, older girls, Riley and friends play a game of “Never Have I Ever” that goes a bit too far – wreaking havoc in Riley’s mind.

Conclusion:

Inside Out 2 is a return to form for Pixar and couldn't have come at a better time. The story is outstanding, balancing both laughs and heart while combining with beautiful animation artistry. Another solid movie from Pixar, with good supplemental features, though I would have loved an audio commentary. Inside Out 2 is a must have addition to your library.

Inside Out 2 is currently out on digital, 4K UHD, blu-ray and DVD.

4K Digital Review of Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes

Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes is the fourth movie in the reboot series of Planet of The Apes. This movie takes place hundreds of years after the events of the first three movies. Caesar, who led the apes to freedom, is remembered as the savior of the apes and humans are now struggling to survive. The film opens with a recap of the last three films and sets up the story for this one. We meet a new set of apes with a young ape named Noa (Owen Teague), being the focus. We learn that the apes have separated into different clans and Noa discovers that not all clans are as peaceful as his. One such clan is ruled by Proximus Caesar (Keven Durand), who proceeds to destroy the village that Noa lives in. Noa escapes and is joined by the wise elder Raka (Peter Mason). They travel to attempt to avenge the village and Noa's family when they come across a human they name Nova. They are shocked when they find out Nova speaks and they all find out they are after Proximus.

Video:

As to be expected, the digital 4K image is stunning. The green and browns of the forests are rich, glossy, and shiny. In fact, all of the landscapes here are gorgeous. The blacks are deep and inky. The amazing digital work o the apes here are some of the best work ever done and shines in 4K.

Audio:

The Atmos track is is superb as it takes full advantage of all the speakers you have. The audio mix envelops you into the world. Wait until you hear the roar of Proximus Caesar and his followers in the arena. Then, wait until you hear the bass as the large bunker doors open. The sounds of the hooves of the horses as Noa and Nova try to get away from Proximus' soldiers will test your rear channel speakers. Dialogue is crystal clear from the front channels and the score encompasses you. Another solid audio mix from Disney,

Bonus Features:

MARVEL STUDIOS’ HALL H COMIC-CON PANEL FEATURES EXCLUSIVE FOOTAGE, SURPRISE APPEARANCES, AND MAJOR NEWS

Hall H was buzzing this evening for Marvel Studios’ Hall H showcase, bringing excited fans at San Diego Comic-Con a first look at what’s next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe—including huge news about Marvel Studios’ next two Avengers films.

“Deadpool & Wolverine”

The Hall H showcase kicked off with a celebration of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” in theaters now. A full choral performance of “Like a Prayer” welcomed the excited crowd with dancing Deadpool variants, which ended when Marvel Studios producer and president Kevin Feige looked for Peterpool amongst the variants, calling Rob Delaney, who stars in the film as Peter, to the stage. Delaney joined Feige as the showcase’s MC, mentioning the surprise “Deadpool & Wolverine” screening for con-goers Thursday, and the massive drone and fireworks show over San Diego’s Petco Park that followed. “Deadpool & Wolverine” has already broken box office records for an R-rated theatrical release, and the film’s opening officially pushed the MCU over the $30 billion box-office mark with 34 movies.  Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, and directed by Shawn Levy, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is now playing in theaters.

“Captain America: Brave New World”

With Sam Wilson about to make his big screen debut as Captain America in “Captain America: Brave New World,” Delaney welcomed to the stage Cap himself, Anthony Mackie. Joining them were Tim Blake Nelson, Danny Ramirez and Giancarlo Esposito, who confirmed he is playing Sidewinder. Together, they revealed exclusive footage, and much to the crowd’s excitement, invited Harrison Ford to take the stage. Ford makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as President Thaddeus Ross. The story follows Sam Wilson, who after meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, finds himself in the middle of an international incident. Sam must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red. Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” opens in U.S. theaters February 14, 2025.

“Thunderbolts*”

Highlighting Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts*,” Delaney welcomed director Jake Schreier to the stage alongside stars Geraldine Viswanathan, Lewis Pullman, Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan and David Harbour. The latter showed up in full Red Guardian garb, earning laughs and applause from the crowd, which was treated to a scene from the movie. Marvel Studios, and a crew of indie veterans, who definitely sold out, present “Thunderbolts*,” an irreverent team-up featuring depressed assassin Yelena Belova alongside the MCU’s least anticipated band of misfits. Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts*” also stars Olga Kurylenko and opens in theaters on May 2, 2025.

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps”

Feige returned to the stage to share details of the upcoming “The Fantastic Four,” which kicks off production Tuesday. Joining Feige on stage was director Matt Shakman and Marvel’s first family together on stage for the first time, Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/The Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/Thing). They all shared some cosmic details about the upcoming feature film that sees Galactus and Silver Surfer target Earth for destruction—and revealed the movie’s full title: “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” But then Hall H was overtaken by none other than the Fantasticar soaring over the crowd, drawing massive cheers as the screens were taken over by a retro-futurist vision of New York City. Featuring music by Oscar®-winning composer Michael Giacchino, Marvel Studios’ “Fantastic Four: First Steps” hits theaters on July 25, 2025.

Avengers”

Just when the audience thought the show was over, Feige told them he had an Avengers update to share: Anthony and Joe Russo, renowned directors of four of the most successful Marvel movies and the studio’s highest-grossing directors with over $6 billion in global earnings, are set to return to Marvel Studios to helm “Avengers: Secret Wars” in May 2027 and “Avengers: Doomsday” in May 2026.

The reveal of “Avengers: Doomsday” left one major question: who would play Doctor Doom?

The directors pointed out that Doctor Doom is one of the most complex characters in the Marvel Universe, and needed a truly great actor to bring him to life. As Feige and the Russos prepared to close out the presentation, robed figures dressed in Doctor Doom masks took the stage and then parted to reveal Robert Downey Jr. who is set to return to the MCU. Hall H erupted, chanting “RDJ!”

The Russo’s company AGBO is set to produce both films alongside Marvel Studios. Stephen McFeely, known for his work on the "Captain America" trilogy and "Avengers: Endgame," will handle the script.

"Being able to create stories and explore characters within the Marvel Universe fulfilled a life-long dream of ours, and we discovered a powerful connection with audiences in each film that we made. We’re thrilled to collaborate once again with Kevin, Lou and the entire Marvel team to bring this epic adventure in storytelling to new and surprising places for both the fans and ourselves”, said The Russo Brothers.

Following the groundbreaking conclusion of "Avengers: Endgame," the Russo Brothers founded AGBO in 2017, aiming to innovate storytelling across film, TV, gaming, and interactive media. As an independent studio led by a collective of seasoned artists, AGBO has achieved unprecedented success, setting new benchmarks with 11 number-one global openings and over $7 billion in box office revenue.

AGBO’s production "Everything Everywhere All at Once" earned seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, while the "Citadel" franchise became Prime Video's second-most-watched show in history. Their Netflix ventures, including "The Gray Man," directed by the Russos and starring Chris Hemsworth, rank among the platform's most-watched content, with "Extraction" emerging as their most successful franchise to date.

Currently, AGBO is in post-production on Netflix's "The Electric State," directed by the Russos and featuring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, based on the acclaimed graphic novel.
